Tomlinson has seen and been through a lot in the years since, dealing with personal loss and graduating to new creative breakthroughs, but on January 31 a new chapter officially begins. The early samples have been enlightening and compelling, mixing emotional ballads and brit-pop wonder into his own unique lane. It’s only further ratcheted up the anticipation.

However, Louis has a pretty giant, multi-million selling old chapter that people can’t stop asking him about. The questions about One Direction mostly come from a sincere appreciation for the award-winning group, but some can’t help but bait Louis, trying to pit him against the success of the other members.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Tomlinson talks about why he hasn’t had anything negative to say about his old group in the lead-up to his solo debut. “First, I absolutely f***ing love the band,” he says, talking about the chance they gave him. “But also, there’s a big history of that, people coming out of bands and chatting s***. I just think they just look so obvious.”

“It’s such a desperate attempt to try and get cool points. So I don’t think it’s authentic. I f***ing love the boys, and I love everything we’ve done together. And I still miss my time with them. I think any of the boys would be lying if they said otherwise. It was a special time in our lives, definitely.”
