With Derby Season right around the corner, we’re getting ready for the Down and Derby Wine Festival happening on Saturday May 2nd at Cooper River Park in South Jersey. If you haven’t checked out a local winery, what are you waiting for? As the Derby approaches, we thought you’d like to know 5 Fun Facts about South Jersey.

The Pine Barrens is a 1.1-million acre of land region that stretches across South Jersey. Legend states that the Jersey Devil lives and haunts the Pine Barrens. There’s plenty of stories about the original Pineys (those who live in the Barrens), but one thing is for sure. You don’t want to be caught disrespecting the Pine Barrens’ land unless you want to anger the Piney locals.

South Jersey is home of the Jersey Devil, also known as the “Leeds Devil.” For those of you picturing the Tasmanian Devil cartoon, I’m 100% with you on that one, but legend says that the Jersey Devil is part goat, bat, and kangaroo hiding in the Pine Barrens in Southern New Jersey. Countless people have sworn that they can hear the Jersey Devil’s terrifying screams at night.

Southern Jersey’s very own, Hammonton is known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World.” The very same Outer Coastal Plain that makes Hammonton a prime wine producing spot gives the town the ideal climate for growing the antioxidant-rich fruit.

Camden locals were the first and only ones to try Campbell’s condensed soup when it was first created by Joseph Campbell & Company. Did you know Band-Aids and barcodes were also invented in South Jersey?

South Jersey is a part of the 2.25-million acre Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area (AVA). Its maritime climate ensures nutrient rich soils and climate for growing grapes and is similar to that in Bordeaux, France—the wine capital of the world. The Outer Coastal Plain AVA includes close to 30 vineyards and wineries such as William Heritage Winery.
