Spots at the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby are highly coveted and highly competitive. Aside from the Derby, there is an entire journey of races leading up to the pinnacle at the Churchill Downs.

At each race that’s scheduled across the world, the horses finishing in the top four spots receive points. The top 20 finishers will then earn themselves a spot at the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby. And with Down & Derby Wine Festival coming up on May 4th at Cooper River Park, we’ve got the dish on the odds on the favorites for the Kentucky Derby this year.

These year’s Kentucky Derby hopefuls are top competitors with talented trainers like Bob Baffert and Bill Mott. CBS has attained early predictions through Jody Demling, a horse racing expert who has accurately anticipated the Derby winners 9 times in the past 10 years. Roadster, a thoroughbred trained by Baffert, has a 6-1 odds of winning after winning the Santa Anita Derby.

The Santa Anita Derby has become an accurate predictor for the Derby. Since its start in 1935, the Santa Anita Derby has seen 11 of its winners go on to win the Kentucky Derby too.

Mott-trained Tacitus has also increased their odds to 8-1 with a win at the Wood Memorial.

Kentucky Derby’s own expert, Joe Kristufek, predicts Maximum Security (with a 6-1 odds) to come in first at the Derby but Demling thinks otherwise. Demling believes the 1 ¼ mile length of the Derby is too long of a distance for Maximum Security.

Demling holds much promise for Cutting Humor who ran a distance of 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.94—an impressive time for a horse that had just taken a five-week layoff. Not only that, but John Velazquez is the impressive contender’s Hall of Fame jockey who plans to boost Cutting Humor’s speed for the Derby next month.

These picks are predictions so nothing’s set in stone, make sure to come out to Down & Derby on May 4th to witness the heart pumping race for yourself and see if your own predictions were spot-on!
