As Florida’s warm waters flow up the Atlantic, New Jersey’s onshore breezes blow warmer air across the Southern Jersey region, and accommodate for the numerous vineyards spread through the Southern expanse.

Named after the family that turned the once abandoned apple orchard into a vineyard, Sharrott Winery is located on 370 S Egg Harbor Rd in Hammonton, New Jersey. Its location sets the winery on the Outer Coastal Plain American Viticultural Area (AVA), a 2.25-million-mile acre region that holds prime conditions for wine production.

One of New Jersey’s younger wineries, having opened to the public in 2008, Sharrott Winery was born when Larry Sharrott Jr. and son attended U.C. Davis to study up on prepping for a winery. Both Larry III and Larry Jr. held prominent positions at their previous jobs with the former working at Lockheed Martin and the latter serving as the Vice President of AtlantiCare Health System. The father-son duo compiled a business plan for their vision and was hyper focused on their future winery’s location stating that “site selection was key.”

The site selection proved to be successful as the nutrient-rich area provided the Sharrotts with grapes for award-winning wines. The Finger Lakes International Wine Competition (FLIWC) held in Rochester, New York is where Master Sommeliers, wine journalists, educators, makers, and other certified wine judges come from all over the world to appraise countless wines through blind judging. Sharrott Winery won 9 medals for their wines in the 2018 FLIWC, with their Trio 2015 and Wicked wines bringing in gold. Click here for a full list and be sure to score a sip on your next visit!

Rich in grapes and quality soil, Sharrott Winery offers wine tastings with their award-winning wines seven days a week. In 2013, Sharrott Winery started selling wine to moviegoers at the nearby Eagle Theatre—the first winery to do so in New Jersey. Visitors to the winery can also experience live events with local musicians and trivia, and culinary experts who run an open-flame oven for visitors at Sharrott Winery (if that’s not the JLo of wineries I don’t know what is).

Not only do they support local artists, but the environment too--solar panels are applied to power their wine production. While young in age, the winery does not lack in quality or production. With over 23,000 acres of wine, Sharrott Winery boasts numerous award-winning wines—all of which you can try at a wine tasting. Be sure to grab some friends and plan your visit today as you prepare for the Down and Derby Wine Festival happening on May 2nd at Cooper River Park!
