Mark Mebus has always had a passion for pizza, but it wasn’t until he crossed paths with Mike Barone that Blackbird Pizzeria would have been possible. Philly Eater shares the story of chef and co-owner Mebus meeting Barone in the early 2000’s, who pointed out the vacant building on South Street to Mebus where Blackbird would eventually launch. With the help of his business partner Ryan Moylan, Blackbird Pizzeria opened in 2010 and has since opened a second location in Northern Liberties!

While the South Street location is currently closed for construction, Mebus’ unique combinations are worth the wait in line. Blackbird’s Spicy BBQ has a sweet kick featuring Texas bbq seitan, root beer bbq, red onions, habanero buffalo, and violife mozzarella. Not to mention their Brunchbird features the perfect combo of tofu scramble, seitan bacon, sauteed spinach, garlic butter, and violife mozzarella. There are endless selections to choose from!
