"The Listeners Are Family": An Interview with Bennett

Everything you ever wanted to know about Bennett, and even some things you never would have imagined!

August 21, 2018

If you're a 96.5 TDY fan, then you're PROBABLY a Bennett fan.

Those two things tend to go together, like red hair and freckles, and we're so proud that he is the voice of TDY from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every weekday.  More than just being a soothing background for your transport or workday, however, Bennett is the heart and soul of the station as well.  He has helped the Pennsylvania SPCA get over 70 dogs adopted with our 96.5 TDY Pet of the Week feature, for example, not to mention having his own menagerie at home.

Bennett is a complex guy, and we got to thinking...what DON'T we know about Bennett?  So we sat him down, asked him some questions, nagged him until he provided answers, and can now present, without further ado, the real, authentic, genuine Bennett on Air himself.  Here's everything you've been wanting to know, and probably some things that you haven't even thought of yet!

Bennett was destined for radio.  His father was in the business, and radio has been Bennett's passion since he was old enough to hold a steady job.  He says, "Radio gives me a life and an outlet.  I feel more myself when I'm on the radio than in real life."  He is grateful for you, the listeners.  You see, Bennett moved to Philadelphia when he landed a radio job, which he describes as the most exciting thing he's ever done.  But he didn't have family close by or a support structure in place, and it was the fan base in Philly that really made him feel at home.  He adds, "They made me feel like their family."

Bennett's main goal as a radio personality is to make each listener feel better about themselves.  As he states, "If you put on my show and I can make you laugh or forget about stress in your life, then I feel like I did my job."  That's the legacy he wants; that's how he wants to be remembered.  He is someone people want to be around, because he inevitably brings light and laughter along with him wherever he goes.

Now, slow down, ladies.  Before he starts sounding perfect...which he is...there's the little matter of his serious girlfriend.  Bennett describes closing down the Bok Bar on their first date, as they discussed anything and everything...including flaws and embarrassing moments, the things you usually try to hide on a first date until you know someone better.  He attributes it to the connection they shared right away, and couldn't provide enough adjectives about her...smart, funny, kind-hearted.  That menagerie you saw belongs to the pair, and they already have plans for the future; a trip to Hawaii or Italy is top on the list, Bennett says.

We also picked up some intriguing Bennett facts you can use to impress your friends, or just feel closer to that smooth voice coming out of the radio.  In no particular order:

  1. He loves the sound of wine bottles opening, but is driven to madness by open-mouth chewers.
  2. The film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" makes him cry "man tears".  (His terminology.)
  3. Bennett's favorite food is seafood...currently, lobster rolls take the #1 spot on his preferred foods list.
  4. He's a huge Eminem fan, but his musical tastes vary from Third Eye Blind to the Stones to Elvis, the King.  In his early, formative years, though, it was Boyz II Men, all the way.
  5. And finally...in his own words...his Most Embarrassing Moment:  "I was working at Friendly's.  Two girls come in to order ice cream to go.  The first girl ordered mint chocolate chip with whipped cream, which I made and gave to her.  The second girl requested coffee with hot fudge.  And I thought to myself, 'Hmmm, that's kinda odd, but who am I to judge?'"

You guessed it...he then handed girl # 2 a cup of coffee with more than just a few squirts of hot fudge sinking to the bottom.  Apparently, the girls were in tears from laughter, and Bennett did not...surprisingly...earn a tip for that transaction.

So, there you have it.  That's him in a nutshell, but there's so much more to learn about the enigma that is Bennett on Air.  Check out our Facebook page on Thursdays to spot him hosting the Pet of the Week, and follow our Instagram to catch some CUTTING-EDGE, BENNETT-CENTRIC, SUPER-EXCITING surprises we have planned!  Thanks for the peek into your life, Bennett!

That awkward moment when someone is watching you take a picture of yourself.
